Kava (Piper methysticum) is a native plant that grows on some of the islands in the South Pacific. Piper methysticum better known as Kava has been made into a tea like drink and consumed for its relaxing effects throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia at least since the early nineteenth century, including Hawaii, Vanuatu, Melanesia, some parts of Micronesia, such as Pohnpei and Kosrae, and the Philippines.
